Mike Rockwell, who is leading Apple’s Siri overhaul, is reviewing options to leave the company or scale back his role.

A Bloomberg report cited by IT outlet 9to5Mac on Tuesday said Rockwell has recently weighed choices about his future role at Apple.

The discussions have come alongside Apple’s recent management reshuffle. Rockwell led development of the Vision Pro and now oversees an artificial intelligence-based next-generation Siri revamp. Apple reorganised after CEO Tim Cook lost trust in the existing AI organisation led by John Giannandrea, and assigned Rockwell the Siri overhaul as part of that process.

Inside Apple, expectations appear to have played a role that Rockwell can solve technically demanding tasks. Rockwell has been viewed as someone who overcame multiple technical hurdles to bring the Vision Pro to market. Against that backdrop, Apple again assigned him the difficult task of revamping Siri.

Apple’s overall AI strategy is currently overseen by software chief Craig Federighi. Rockwell is known to have shown reservations about that reporting structure, and a perceived burden of working under Federighi has also been cited as a factor behind his review of his future.

Some observers also said an immediate departure is unlikely. The core of the report is that even if Rockwell leaves Apple or moves into an advisory role, he is unlikely to depart before the Siri upgrade is completed. Apple also faces a significant burden in changing the leader while the AI-based Siri overhaul is under way.

The report is also linked to the task of retaining talent that John Ternus, mentioned as a potential next CEO candidate, will face. Apple is reported to have surfaced other grievances during recent senior executive appointments. Kate Bergeron, who was discussed internally as a candidate to lead hardware, is said to have expressed dissatisfaction after Tom Mairbe was appointed to that role.

In that context, Rockwell’s future is tied to the stability of Apple’s AI organisation beyond a simple personnel move. The Siri overhaul is seen as directly linked to restoring Apple’s AI competitiveness. As a result, whether Rockwell actually reduces his role or steps back as an adviser, or keeps a key post even after the Siri revamp is completed, is emerging as the next variable in Apple’s internal reshuffle.
