Coinbase CEO says subscription era is over, replaced by AI and stablecoins
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the combination of stablecoins, the x402 payment protocol and AI could change how people pay for online content and weaken monthly subscription models. He said it could enable usage-based micropayments and reduce friction in payments. Armstrong highlighted online news, saying users should not need to pay monthly to read a single article as AI agents could fetch needed content and automatically pay publishers.

Circle releases USDC spec for machine payments protocol, targeting AI agent payments
Circle has released an official USDC payment specification for the Machine Payments Protocol, standardising how AI agents and automated services pay in USDC on EVM-compatible blockchains and Solana. The spec introduces a standard payment interface, adds MPP’s first crosschain payment profile via Circle Gateway and includes support for USDCx, a Stacks-based USDC-linked stablecoin. The announcement did not include user numbers, volumes or adoption metrics.

Coinbase, AWS support publishers charging content fees via AI agents
Coinbase is working with Amazon Web Services to help publishers charge AI agents for content through the x402 agent payment protocol. The collaboration targets publishers using AWS CloudFront and its web application firewall. Publishers can enable the feature within existing AWS settings without separate accounts, invoices or API keys. AI agents pay in USDC on the Base network, with Coinbase’s x402 facilitator verifying payment on blockchain before content is delivered.
