GPT-6 boosts COBOL coding pass rates, handles legacy programming languages

OpenAI\'s GPT-6 series showed much stronger coding performance than earlier models in programming languages with limited training data, including COBOL, Fortran and Visual Basic. OpenAI released results from a new MultiLangBench benchmark that measures how well models build an SQLite-compatible database engine across 20 languages and pass set functional tests. OpenAI said the results could support maintenance and modernization of legacy software, while noting the evaluation was internally designed and would require expert review and further validation for real systems.

Tech Insight: Software is consuming the world faster

Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Marc Andreessen (마크 앤드리슨) shared a post on X after saying he would make an additional investment in coding agent company Cognition. He said AI is accelerating the pace at which software is “consuming” the world, arguing software is moving from a human-speed process to a computing-speed one. He cited rising tech dominance among top global companies and examples of Cognition’s agent Devin boosting output and automation.

IBM shrinks z17 mainframe to lower barrier to AI infrastructure

IBM has unveiled a smaller z17 mainframe and a LinuxONE 5 server lineup targeting on-premise enterprise AI demand. The products include single-frame and rack-mounted z17 systems, plus LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 and LinuxONE 5 Express. IBM said the z17 now fits a standard 19-inch rack. It said the new systems support real-time AI inference, fraud detection and automated decision-making without moving data to the cloud, alongside updated software and security features.
