IBM shares plunged 11 percent after Anthropic announced it would support modernising the COBOL programming language through Claude Code, CNBC reported on Feb. 23.

COBOL is a decades-old programming language that still plays a key role in large-scale data processing systems in areas such as finance and retail. It is also one of IBM's main businesses. Against that backdrop, Anthropic said AI can analyse dependencies in COBOL codebases, document workflows and automate tasks that take months. This is seen as technology that can sharply cut the cost of modernising COBOL.

The cybersecurity industry has also taken a hit after Anthropic recently announced Claude Code security features. As AI gains the ability to scan code and find vulnerabilities, the value of traditional security solutions is being shaken, CNBC reported.
