In 2026 it is traded as ETP assets recognised by governments and major financial institutions and is changing the nature of the market.

Markets are re-reading the remark amid debate over whether bitcoin should be viewed as a volatile tech stock or defensive digital gold, and some now frame it as a distinct asset defined by its protocol, supply cap and network metrics.

After the “Cablegate” disclosures, WikiLeaks lost access to major payment and remittance providers including Visa, Mastercard and PayPal, wiping out about 95 percent of its income. It then solicited donations via bitcoin addresses, a move later followed by services such as WordPress and the Internet Archive.
