Anthropic Seoul office faces early test as export controls seen easing within days
Anthropic has opened a Seoul office, launching as U.S. government AI export controls put its coordination with South Korea to an early test. Executive Chris Chaoui said he did not think the controls would remain and expected the issue to be resolved within days. The firm said access work for South Korean companies and institutions linked to a cybersecurity project was halted. The office will focus on enterprise sales and partnerships.

OpenAI completes appointment of local representative in South Korea
OpenAI has completed the appointment of a local representative in South Korea under the revised Personal Information Protection Act, officials said. The law requires overseas firms with a Korean unit to designate that unit as the local representative and disclose it in their privacy policy. OpenAI updated its Korea privacy policy on April 1. OpenAI also said it will follow obligations under the AI Basic Act, which requires a local representative and reporting to the science ministry.

When will Anthropic appoint head of Korea branch?
Anthropic Korea remains without a branch head eight months after its launch, despite earlier expectations that an appointment would be made late last year or early this year. The company said it is continuing the selection process but gave no details. Anthropic has hired staff focused on startup and developer communities, launched events and is recruiting for roles in Seoul. It is also discussing cooperation with the South Korean government.
