AI tools in hospital coding may raise U.S. healthcare costs, insurer analysis says
An insurance industry analysis said wider use of AI medical coding tools in hospitals could be pushing up U.S. healthcare costs. It said hospitals increasingly classify patients as medically more complex, leading to about $942 million in additional spending over two years. The analysis found no corresponding change in the treatment provided. About 70 percent of the added costs were tied to secondary diagnoses beyond the main reason for admission.

Startups race to build in-house AI models as fintech joins in
Startups are accelerating efforts to develop their own AI models rather than rely on those from OpenAI and Anthropic, driven by cost pressures, a desire to cut dependence and a push for greater control. Legal AI startup Harvey launched an in-house model based on Moonshot AI’s open-weight Kimi K3 after its gross margin turned sharply negative. Healthcare, customer support, fintech, coding and design startups are also building or considering custom models.

South Korea AI investment should focus on building moats in infrastructure bottlenecks
Cho Yong-min (조용민), CEO of venture investment firm Unboundlabdev, said South Korea should concentrate AI investment on infrastructure bottlenecks to expand its stake in the global AI market, rather than competing with big tech on general-purpose model performance. He identified four key bottlenecks: memory, interconnect, thermal management and power. Cho said competitiveness comes from deep integration into customers’ work, and urged government policy to target value chains where Korea is strong and future bottlenecks.
