Hands-on with Alibaba\'s Qwen3.8-27B: strong performance but thinks too much

Alibaba has open-sourced Qwen3.8-27B, a multimodal AI model sized to run locally on higher-spec MacBook Pros or Mac Studios. Simon Willison, who developed Datasette and co-developed Django, published a hands-on review. He said the model’s performance is impressive but criticised its default “xhigh” deep-thinking setting for taking too long on simple tasks. He cited a 21-minute image-generation response and noted slower speeds even on high-end hardware.

OpenAI, AWS and GitHub back agent plugin standard

OpenAI, AWS, Cursor, GitHub and Microsoft have voiced support for Agent Plugin 1.0.0, a reusable portable package standard for expanding AI agents. A report said the vendor-neutral open standard, led by agent infrastructure firm Vercel, combines AI agent skills and MCP servers into a single deployable plugin that can be moved across clients or runtimes. Some engineers warned about governance and permissions risks, while others called it progress for enterprise adoption.

Science, ICT and interior ministries to push disaster safety network smartwatch development

South Korea will develop a smartwatch dedicated to the disaster safety communications network to reduce the equipment burden on responders and deliver key information quickly, the government said. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety selected the project as a new task under an emergency response research programme and will solicit research organisations. The smartwatch will link to the network and use AI to analyse and summarise communications and send alerts. It will also monitor vital signs and location.
