Credit margin debt investing still rises despite drop in leveraged ETF trading
Credit trading loan balances in South Korea have risen again to more than 33 trillion won, reversing a recent decline, even as trading in single-stock leveraged ETFs has dropped sharply after tighter rules. Overall stock market turnover has slowed and investor deposit funds have slipped below 100 trillion won. Regulators are preparing additional investor-protection measures related to margin loans and unsettled trades, including tighter checks for minors and older investors and improved notice procedures.

Woori Financial Group said it supplied 25.3 trillion won in productive finance through August, reaching 116.3 percent of its annual target. It plans to expand funding and investment focused on regional areas and small and mid-sized enterprises. The group reviewed progress at a Sept. 16 meeting chaired by Chairman Yim Jong-yong. It also reported 2.2 trillion won in inclusive finance through August and plans to expand debt write-offs and apply AI transformation to operations.

Kakao is seeking to win over retail shareholders ahead of a planned corporate spinoff into continuing company KakaoX and new unit KakaoAI. KakaoAI aims to begin monetising AI services in 2027 and targets more than 1 trillion won in AI revenue by 2030. KakaoX plans to use gains from selling its stake in Dunamu to buy back and cancel 300 billion won of treasury shares over three years after the split.
