Token-maxing backlash fuels debate over corporate AI spending without results

Corporate executives are starting to question whether sharply higher AI spending is producing real results, Axios reported on May 28. The report said Microsoft cancelled most Claude Code licences, while Uber’s chief operating officer said AI costs are increasingly hard to justify. CloudBees CEO Anuj Kapur said job cuts may be the only way to offset AI costs. Others cited token-maxing, unclear use cases, costs, people and data as key obstacles.

Microsoft AI chief says China-style distillation-based open-source models have limits, builds own AI without distillation

Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman criticised the limits of Chinese open-source AI models such as DeepSeek, saying distillation-based approaches lead to a dead end. He described distillation as stuffing other people's knowledge into a model and said it can work for task-specific small models but falls behind frontier models in general use. He also said frontier developers do not release the large datasets used for training, making priorities hard to assess.

GM unveils mid-size electric off-roader concept Hummer X

General Motors has unveiled the GMC Hummer X, a mid-size electric off-road concept presented in SUV and pickup forms. Electrek reported the vehicle is not intended for mass production and serves as a platform to test new GM technologies. GM highlighted a low centre of gravity, instant acceleration and off-road hardware. The concept was designed in Pasadena, California, and includes a Hummer Hub app suite and a reconnaissance drone.
