Police clear former Gopax chief in GoPay case as repayment process watched

South Korean police have decided not to forward to prosecutors two complaints filed against former Streami chief Lee Jun-haeng, the founder of crypto exchange Gopax, over the GoPay payout suspension that affected about 3,000 users. Police cited insufficient evidence for embezzlement and found no breach of trust, calling a bond sale a lawful management decision. The case has drawn attention as a repayment process delayed for nearly three years remains incomplete.

South Korea stock market cap overtakes Taiwan, rises to world No. 8

South Korea’s total stock market capitalisation has overtaken Taiwan after recently surpassing Germany, rising to eighth in the world, Korea Exchange data showed. Total market value for KOSPI, KOSDAQ and KONEX stood at 4,799.4 trillion won at Friday’s close, slightly above Taiwan’s 4,798.7 trillion won equivalent. The market has continued to rally this year, with KOSPI and KOSDAQ up 20.8 percent and 16.8 percent from end-2025, while brokers raise KOSPI targets.

Penny stocks surge 38 percent in two years as regulators move to tighten delisting rules

South Korea's financial authorities are considering including so-called penny stocks, shares priced below 1,000 won, in delisting requirements in line with the government's push to revitalise capital markets. The number of such stocks on the KOSDAQ was 170 as of Feb. 6, about 10 percent of listed issues, up 38.2 percent from early 2024. Officials referenced Nasdaq rules for stocks under $1 and said measures would be pushed quickly. Experts urged objective criteria and steps to support trading of delisted shares.
