KB Financial Group on Sunday released a video titled "Maizuru Remembers the History of That Day," filmed in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, on the anniversary of the Ukishima Maru sinking.

The video is a follow-up to "Ukishima Maru, a Story We Will Remember," released in June. KB Financial visited Japan with professor Seo Kyung-duk (서경덕) of Sungshin Women's University. They toured the accident waters, memorial facilities and a temple where remains are kept, and included the stories of people involved in a local memorial gathering.

The Ukishima Maru incident refers to the sinking on Aug. 24, 1945, shortly after Korea's liberation, of the Ukishima Maru, which was heading to Busan carrying Korean forced labor conscripts and others, in waters near Maizuru in Kyoto Prefecture. More than 80 years have passed since the incident, but tasks such as fact-finding and repatriating victims' remains remain unresolved.

The video examines traces of the incident, focusing on the accident site and memorial facilities in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture. The Ukishima Maru remained at sea for a long period after sinking and was salvaged in 1954. Some of the remains still in the hull are believed to have been lost during that process.

The head of a group called "the association to mourn the victims of the Ukishima Maru" said, "When the Ukishima Maru sinking occurred, the cause should have been identified immediately and the remains should have been recovered first, but leaving it unattended for 9 years is something that can never be tolerated."

A KB Financial official said, "We produced it to remember with the public an unfinished history that has continued for more than 80 years since liberation and to create momentum to repatriate the remains of victims who have yet to return to their homeland." The official said, "We will continue private-sector interest and support so that the remains resting in Japan can return to their hometown as soon as possible."
