Stripe stressed that blockchain infrastructure needs to scale to 1 billion transactions per second (TPS) as AI agents spread.

Cointelegraph reported on Wednesday that Stripe CEO Patrick Collison (패트릭 콜리슨) and co-founder John Collison (존 콜리슨) said in an annual letter that blockchains must scale to 1 billion TPS to process AI agent transactions.

Solana and the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) are considered the fastest blockchains at 1,140 TPS and 1,196 TPS, respectively, but that is not enough to handle a web3 economy led by AI agents. Solana can process up to 5,289 TPS and ICP up to 25,621 TPS, but Cointelegraph reported that bottlenecks are still likely if AI agents are fully activated.

Stripe predicted AI agents will develop to a level where they automatically fill out web forms, learn user preferences and carry out repetitive tasks. It said that without blockchain scalability, an inevitable surge in AI agent transactions would lead to network delays and sharp increases in fees.
