MegazoneCloud, an AI and cloud company, co-hosted the finals of the quantum computing hackathon Quantum Reframing Challenge 2026 with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) on Aug. 26.
According to the company, Quanskkuad, a team of three second-year students in the Department of Biomechatronics at Sungkyunkwan University, won the grand prize for a project analyzing copper catalyst efficiency in converting carbon dioxide to ethylene.
MegazoneCloud said Quanskkuad presented a way to improve the accuracy of predicting the selectivity of copper catalysts that convert carbon dioxide into ethylene by using quantum computing. It said the team received high marks for analyzing the limitations of existing calculation methods and suggesting the potential to reduce unnecessary catalyst synthesis and experiments.
The top excellence awards went to QAIST for screening candidates for high heat-resistant, lightweight materials and to Schrodinger's Puppy for correcting semiconductor precursor calculations. The excellence awards went to DEEP DIVE for concert venue noise control and to Kim Haeng-in for port crane scheduling.
The hackathon was created to seek approaches by redefining difficult problems in industrial settings into problems that quantum computing can handle. A total of 214 people in 73 teams, including high school students, university and graduate students, researchers and industry workers, competed.
During the contest, MegazoneCloud planned and operated step-by-step training, quantum computing platform tutorials and expert mentoring. On technical support, KISTI supported an IonQ Cloud usage environment for finalist teams, and global quantum computing companies Quandela and Pasqal also provided QPU usage environments and core technologies.
MegazoneCloud and KISTI plan to link outstanding projects from the hackathon to follow-up proof-of-concept and demonstration tasks to verify industrial applicability. They also plan to continue identifying talent with experience using quantum computing services and new use cases.
