It has emerged that a post office delivery worker who was delivering mail spotted a fire in a freight truck, evacuated the driver and carried out initial firefighting.

Korea Post said on Tuesday that Lim Seung-man (임승만) of the Seoul Gangnam Post Office witnessed smoke coming from a stopped freight truck near the Daemosan Station intersection in Seoul at about 3 p.m. on Aug. 20.

Lim judged that a fire had broken out. He went to the nearby Gaepo 2-dong Community Service Center, explained the situation and received a fire extinguisher. He then informed the driver about the fire, had the driver evacuate the vehicle and used the extinguisher to put out the flames.

The fire was completely extinguished without firefighters being dispatched. Lim also checked carefully for remaining embers at the ignition point and the possibility of reignition, and took follow-up measures after the incident.

Lim said, "I only did what I naturally should as a public official, and I am glad I was able to put out the flames early." He added, "The safety training I receive consistently every day at the post office was a big help in this fire situation."
