RISC-V chip designer SiFive has unveiled its BigSky SF-2U870 development server based on its own CPU, The Register reported on Aug. 25 (local time).

The company said BigSky SF-2U870 supports migrating key workloads to the RISC-V open architecture, and hyperscalers and software customers plan to adopt it.

The report said BigSky SF-2U870, unveiled by SiFive at the Hot Chips conference in Palo Alto, California, runs a range of workloads. It supports porting RISC-V data centre software, workload optimisation and system validation.

It includes 32 SiFive P870-D cores, 256GB of DDR5 memory, two 7.68TB NVMe SSDs and 10 and 25 Gbps OCP-standard network adapters. SiFive introduced it as the world's first enterprise-grade rack-mount 2U RISC-V server.

SiFive said hyperscalers, software developers and major SoC companies are already running workloads on BigSky systems. SiFive is a fabless design company that does not manufacture chips directly like Arm. The company said its own IP has been used in about 500 designs and cumulative core shipments have exceeded 10 billion.

Patrick Little (패트릭 리틀), chairman and CEO of SiFive, said, "We are focused on helping customers optimise the total cost of ownership of their own SoC solutions." He said, "The spread of RISC-V in data centres is no longer a story of the distant future, but something happening now."

SiFive named Canonical and Red Hat as partners. Brian Harrington (브라이언 해링턴), a technology strategist at Red Hat, said, "Running RHEL 10 on BigSky is evidence that we have moved beyond simple validation and from theory to real production."
