[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] A paid ChatGPT subscription can be canceled with just a few clicks, but canceling a subscription alone does not fully stop using ChatGPT. That is because stopping payments, deleting an account and limiting data use are separate procedures.

According to IT outlet Engadget on Aug. 24 (local time), the process for canceling a ChatGPT subscription is relatively simple. But canceling a subscription only stops recurring payments. It does not remove the account itself, and additional steps may be needed depending on how far a user wants to stop using ChatGPT.

The first distinction to make is between stopping use of paid features and completely deleting a ChatGPT account. Users who want to stop using paid features and only reduce costs can proceed with canceling the subscription. Those who do not want to use ChatGPT at all should separately consider deleting the account.

Data use is also separate from canceling a subscription. Users who want to keep an account but prevent new conversations from being used for model training should not cancel the subscription, but check related personal information and data settings. This means payment status and data use are separate issues.

The steps needed also vary depending on the purpose of using ChatGPT. Users who only want to cut off paid service should cancel the subscription. Those who want to end use of the service itself should delete the account. Those who want to keep an account but adjust the scope of data use should check separate data settings.

In particular, because an account remains after a subscription is canceled, users need to clearly distinguish whether they simply want to cut costs or leave the service. Even for users concerned about personal information or conversation data being used for model training, canceling a subscription alone does not carry out all the steps they want.

Ultimately, stopping use of ChatGPT is not something that ends with a single button. Users need to examine three items separately: payment, account and data use. Canceling a subscription is only the first step to address costs, and users who want to leave ChatGPT completely or limit data use should check additional steps that fit their purpose.
