On Aug. 22, local time, IT outlet TechRadar reported that OpenAI presented ways to use ChatGPT as an understanding-focused learning tool through Study Mode and plug-ins for college students.

The core is helping the learning process rather than immediately producing the answer. In Study Mode, when users ask a question, ChatGPT provides step-by-step questions and hints. It checks whether the learner properly understands the content before moving to the next step. For example, when studying maths or science, users can ask it to teach one concept at a time and get hints when they get stuck, rather than asking for a concept to be explained all at once.

Users can also upload notes taken during lectures or photos of problems. If users upload class materials and ask it to point out key concepts first and then create a quiz, they can structure a learning process around those materials.

Features for college students are more systematic. They are available only at universities that have adopted ChatGPT Edu. Students at those universities can upload lecture slides or notes to create an interactive learning page that includes visual explanations, study questions and feedback on answers.

Users can also manage schedules using a syllabus. If they enter a syllabus, it organises weekly study plans, exams and assignment deadlines, and they can receive suggestions on what to prepare starting at least a week in advance for each schedule. Using reminder functions can also help reduce situations in which exams and assignments pile up at the end of the semester.

Flashcards and practice tests are also core learning features. Instead of users making memorisation cards themselves, ChatGPT creates cards based on lecture materials and can be set up to focus on confusing concepts.

Practice tests can also be set to present one question at a time. It can be used so it does not show the answer before the user responds, explains incorrect answers, and raises the difficulty of the next question once the user gets it right. In the college-student features, it can analyse weak areas and 이어갈 수 있다.

Ultimately, the direction OpenAI is targeting is a shift from "AI that does assignments" to "AI that designs studying".
