Apple Music will add a "Made With AI" label to content produced with artificial intelligence within the year.
The move will appear on user screens within the year, Apple told creators in an email, 9to5Mac reported on Aug. 20 local time.
The step details an AI content transparency policy Apple flagged in March. Under the policy, creators must report AI use, based on set criteria, when new artwork, tracks, compositions or music videos are made with AI. Related information will also be displayed on user screens.
Apple Music said the purpose of the policy is to provide listeners with as much transparency as possible. Detailed criteria will be provided through its music style guide.
The music streaming industry is stepping up its response to an influx of generative AI music. Spotify recently said it will, by default, exclude music generated through AI Personas from editor picks and algorithmic recommendations. Streaming platform Deezer said last year it would exclude AI-generated tracks from recommendations and curated playlists, and last month disclosed that AI-generated music for the first time accounted for more than 50 percent of daily new uploads.
Apple Music has also identified a gap between uploads and actual listening. Oliver Schusser (올리버 슈서), head of Apple Music's platform, said in a recent podcast appearance that more than one-third of music uploaded to Apple Music each month is AI-generated. But the share of actual listening within the service is under 0.5 percent. That means uploads are surging, but user consumption remains limited.
The label rollout is therefore closer to an overhaul of the content classification system. Creators will have to disclose AI use more clearly, and users will be able to directly 확인 how music or visual content was made. Platform competition over recommendation, curation and exposure policies is also likely to become more segmented.
Apple has already flagged that it will show the tag to users within this year. The next points to watch are when it is applied, the scope of the display, and how finely the creator reporting criteria will be detailed.
