South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT said on Aug. 14 it will unveil a permanent hologram exhibition at Seodaemun Prison History Museum's women's ward from Aug. 15, Liberation Day.

The exhibition uses AI technology to restore old photos of independence activist Yu Gwan-sun and other female independence fighters and render them as 3D holograms. Visitors can view the holograms without wearing separate devices and can also experience interactive exhibits.

Content themed around the history of the female independence movement and life in detention is prepared across eight rooms in the women's ward where Yu and other female independence fighters were held.

Room 1 covers the formation process of the women's ward and its historical significance, and Rooms 2 and 3 introduce the March 1 Movement and the female independence movement in the 1920s. Other exhibits cover themes such as prisoners' daily life, childbirth in prison, resistance by female workers, meeting with independence activists, and records and memorials of detained female independence fighters.

The permanent exhibition is part of the ministry's Hologram Technology Commercialisation Demonstration Support Project. It was expanded into a permanent display earlier this year after the Seodaemun-gu Urban Management Corporation and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) signed a business agreement based on a hologram service demonstration and showroom built at the museum in 2024.

The ministry has supported hologram specialist companies since 2024 with efforts including turning research and development results into products, verifying performance and services, minimum viable product testing, technical consulting, and domestic and overseas exhibitions and investment attraction.

Nam Cheol-gi (남철기), the ministry's director general for software policy, said, "Based on the technological capabilities of domestic hologram companies, we re-examined the lives of female independence fighters in history." He added, "We will support virtual convergence companies, including hologram firms, so they can grow in the cultural, social and industrial fields."
