OpenAI has released a preview version of its ChatGPT desktop app for Linux worldwide. TechCrunch reported on Monday that the launch means ChatGPT and Codex now support all major desktop operating systems.
Linux users can use ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex in a desktop environment with the app.
OpenAI said Linux is one of the most requested platforms for its desktop app.
The app supports Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS Desktop, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. The distributions OpenAI selected are often the basis for many desktop derivatives, so some derivatives may also be compatible with the ChatGPT app.
ChatGPT has been available on multiple desktop operating systems, but there has been no Linux-only app. OpenAI filled that gap with this release.
The Linux desktop app release came later than Anthropic. Anthropic released its Claude desktop app for Linux about a month ago and supports Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
