[Digital Today reporter Sangyeop Oh (오상엽)] The Kosdaq jumped nearly 7 percent and moved above the 850 level. The KOSPI also rose and neared 6,300 as individuals and institutions absorbed heavy net selling by foreigners.

On Aug. 10, the KOSPI ended up 40.89 points, or 0.65 percent, at 6,299.66. The index opened at 6,306.33.

In the main board market, foreigners posted net sales of 1.49 trillion won. Individuals and institutions posted net purchases of 892.8 billion won and 576.2 billion won, respectively, supporting the index.

Top stocks by market capitalisation were mostly mixed. Samsung Electronics rose 0.43 percent to 232,000 won and SK Hynix fell 0.14 percent to 1.42 million won.

SK Square ended up 1.06 percent at 949,000 won, while Samsung Electro-Mechanics closed down 0.31 percent at 1.274 million won.

LG Energy Solution gained 2.08 percent to 367,500 won and Hyundai Motor rose 3.16 percent to end at 408,000 won. Samsung Biologics and Samsung Life Insurance also climbed 0.84 percent and 1.81 percent, respectively.

Hanwha Aerospace surged 5.01 percent to close at 1.152 million won. KB Financial fell 2.33 percent to 171,700 won.

The Kosdaq ended up 55.66 points, or 6.97 percent, at 854.47, rising above the 850 level.

The Kosdaq jumped from early in the session, and at 9:50:48 a.m. a buy-sidecar was triggered, halting the validity of programme buy orders for 5 minutes.

At the time of the trigger, Kosdaq 150 futures rose 6.05 percent from the previous session to 1,458.60, and the Kosdaq 150 spot index gained 6.25 percent to 1,453.97.

In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate was 1,419.30 won, up 8.30 won from the previous session.

South Korean shares have recently seen sharp swings led by KOSPI blue chips, while buying has been spreading to the Kosdaq. The Kosdaq rose nearly 7 percent on the day, showing clearer strength than the KOSPI.
