A 2025 blockchain security report estimates that nearly 200 security incidents caused about $2.935 billion in losses. That is fewer cases than in 2024 but a 46 percent increase in total losses, indicating far larger losses per incident.
SlowMist's 2025 annual report on blockchain security and anti-money laundering showed Ethereum suffered the biggest ecosystem losses at about $254 million. It was followed by BNB Chain (BSC) at $21.93 million and Solana at $17.45 million.
By segment, DeFi projects accounted for 126 incidents, or 63 percent of the total, with losses of about $649 million. But in terms of the scale of losses, centralised exchanges were dominant. Losses totalled $1.809 billion from 12 incidents. A hack at Bybit worth about $1.46 billion was recorded as the worst security incident of the year.
The report also warned about activity by North Korea-linked hacking groups. SlowMist estimated that from January 2024 to September 2025, North Korea-related hackers stole at least $2.837 billion worth of cryptocurrencies, an indicator of the seriousness of state-backed cybercrime.
