Sony has suspended operations at a key semiconductor production base and has begun facility safety inspections after an earthquake in Japan's Kumamoto prefecture. With a key plant responsible for image sensor production halted, attention is focusing on how this could affect future supply schedules.

ITmedia Japan reported on July 29 that Sony Semiconductor Solutions said it halted production at the Kumamoto Technology Center, a group production base, due to the impact of the "Reiwa 8 Kumamoto earthquake" that occurred the previous day. The company is checking for damage across buildings and production equipment. A restart date has not been decided.

The Kumamoto Technology Center is one of Sony's key semiconductor production hubs. It produces CMOS image sensors used in smartphones and digital cameras, and is responsible for the main products of Sony's image sensor business. CMOS image sensors are semiconductors that convert light into electrical signals and are widely used in smartphone cameras, digital cameras, automobiles and industrial equipment. The production halt is drawing attention because a key production line has entered the safety inspection phase, beyond a simple temporary shutdown.

The Kumamoto Technology Center is also home to the headquarters of Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing. Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing is a subsidiary of Sony Semiconductor Solutions and is responsible for the design, development and production of semiconductors. The company has not disclosed the extent of damage or the production restart schedule so far.

Other regional production bases have so far been found to have no major abnormalities. Sony said no major damage was confirmed to buildings and production equipment at production facilities in Isahaya in Nagasaki prefecture; Oita and Kunisaki in Oita prefecture; and Kirishima in Kagoshima prefecture. It also said there were no injuries among employees who were working at the time of the earthquake.

The market sees the results of equipment inspections at the Kumamoto Technology Center and the timing of a restart as key variables. As the plant is a core base responsible for Sony's image sensor production, prolonged inspections could also affect supply schedules for some products.

However, the information confirmed so far is limited to the production halt, the start of facility safety inspections and whether other regional production bases are operating normally. Sony plans to closely inspect the condition of buildings and production equipment at the Kumamoto plant and then decide the timing of a production restart based on the findings.
