[DigitalToday reporter Dae-geon Seok] Samsung Electronics set new quarterly records for both revenue and operating profit in the second quarter of 2026. Samsung Electronics said on Wednesday it posted revenue of 171.5 trillion won and operating profit of 89.5 trillion won in the second quarter of 2026. That was up 130 percent in revenue and 1,813.83 percent in operating profit from a year earlier. From the previous quarter, revenue rose 28.11 percent and operating profit gained 56.37 percent. It achieved record quarterly revenue and operating profit at the same time.

Cumulative results for the first half also expanded sharply. Cumulative revenue came to 305.4 trillion won, up 98.67 percent from a year earlier, and cumulative operating profit was 146.7 trillion won, up 1,191.45 percent.

The DS (Device Solutions) division led results. DS revenue was 127.5 trillion won and operating profit was 89.2 trillion won. The company said server demand remained strong as agentic AI spread, and both DRAM and NAND logged record sales. It also highlighted an expansion in HBM4 (High Bandwidth Memory 4) supply and said it shipped HBM4E samples first in the industry, maintaining its technology edge.

Foundry revenue rose on increased demand for HBM base dies and from customers in the Americas. System LSI posted record cumulative first-half revenue, supported by higher sales of mobile SoCs (systems on chips) and sensors despite weaker demand.

DX (Device Experience) revenue was 48.0 trillion won, but operating profit showed a 0.8 trillion won loss. Revenue grew from a year earlier on strong flagship sales including the Galaxy S26 series, but rising component costs weighed on profitability. MX (Mobile Experience) also saw steady sales of its A series, but it failed to offset cost burdens.

Harman posted revenue of 4.6 trillion won and operating profit of 0.4 trillion won. Expanding automotive revenue and strong sales of personal audio contributed to improved results. Display posted revenue of 7.5 trillion won and operating profit of 0.7 trillion won, helped by demand for high-end mobile products and an expanding gaming monitor market.

A currency effect from a stronger dollar also supported results. The company said it saw a positive impact of about 3.1 trillion won from the previous quarter, centered on the components business. Research and development spending was 16.0 trillion won, the highest on record.

In the second half, the DS division plans to sustain market leadership by expanding sales of HBM4E, DDR5 (Double Data Rate 5), SOCAMM2 and eSSD (NAND-based solid state drives). Foundry plans to start mass production of second-generation 2-nanometre products for mobile and to seek more orders for AI and HPC (high performance computing). The DX division expects a difficult business environment to continue due to rising global uncertainty and higher component costs. The company said MX plans to defend profitability by increasing the share of higher value-added products, including Ultra models and the new foldable Z8 series.
