Circle has acquired key assets in IBM's blockchain patent portfolio, becoming the largest blockchain patent holder in the United States.

On July 28, blockchain media outlet CoinPost reported that Circle said on July 27 it had secured major blockchain-related patent assets held by IT conglomerate IBM. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The acquired assets consist of more than 680 patent families, and the number of individual patents registered by country totals about 1,000 worldwide. The patent scope covers core blockchain-based technologies across banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain authentication and secure cloud operations.

Circle will significantly expand its intellectual property base through the acquisition. The company said it will link this to strengthening the foundations of its internet financial system buildout business, including USDC, Circle Payments Network and its enterprise blockchain "Ark". It is seen as a move to grow both its stablecoin payment network and enterprise blockchain business beyond simply securing patents.

The company also plans to discuss additional commercial partnerships with IBM. This has raised interest in whether the two companies will broaden their relationship into actual business cooperation after the transfer of technology assets.

Sarah Wilson (사라 윌슨), Circle's chief legal officer and corporate secretary, stressed that intellectual property is directly tied to the company's core strategy. She said, "IBM is a pioneer in technological innovation," adding, "This acquisition can strengthen the foundation that supports internet-native international finance."

Market attention is focused less on the number of patents than on which technology areas Circle has obtained. The assets Circle secured center on foundational technologies directly connected to the financial sector and enterprise systems. As a result, Circle has also secured defensive tools and bargaining power needed to expand its business axis beyond being a stablecoin issuer into payment infrastructure and enterprise blockchain.

Against this backdrop, Circle's patent strategy is also intertwined with competition in on-chain financial infrastructure. Circle is expanding payments and enterprise networks centered on USDC, and the acquisition can be seen as a move to internalise technology assets in that process. If discussions on additional commercial cooperation lead to an actual agreement, the Circle-IBM relationship could expand beyond a patent sale into a business partnership, it said.

The deal is drawing attention as Circle has broadened its technology holdings not only as a stablecoin issuer but also as a blockchain-based financial infrastructure company. The fact that the patent acquisition and talks on additional cooperation with IBM are proceeding together is also seen as a trend of strengthening both technology assets and business linkages at the same time.
