Danal joins science ministry project to expand deposit token payment infrastructure

Danal will build online and offline payment infrastructure based on deposit tokens in connection with the Bank of Korea’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot project, Project Hangang. It aims to use existing payment networks to reduce merchants’ burden of building systems while improving settlement cycles and payment fees.

Danal said on Sunday it had been selected as a participating institution in the “deposit token-based payment infrastructure expansion project” under the “2026 blockchain innovation-leading project” promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency.

The project will be carried out in the form of a private consortium led by the Korea Financial Telecommunications and Clearings Institute, with 9 commercial banks, 8 payment gateway (PG) operators and 2 large demand-side participants taking part.

Danal will participate as a payments company and build online and offline payment services using deposit tokens. It plans to link deposit tokens issued by banks to existing payment systems and provide infrastructure so payments can be made across a range of merchant environments.

It will pursue the project by using existing payment infrastructure without building a separate payment system. Danal plans to use its experience operating payment systems to check payment stability and user convenience.

A Danal official said, “This project will lay the groundwork for using deposit tokens in real commercial environments,” adding, “We will focus on building a payment environment that consumers and merchants can use conveniently.”
