Peter Steinberger, who developed the AI agent OpenClaw, stressed to AI developers that “exploration” matters more than a “perfect plan.”

An experimental approach using AI technology was the key to success, and he has kept that approach even after joining OpenAI, TechCrunch reported on Feb. 25 local time.

Steinberger said on OpenAI’s new podcast “Builders Unscripted” that in the early days of developing OpenClaw, he approached it like exploration without a clear plan. He initially tried to build a tool integrating with WhatsApp, but paused the project after expecting AI companies would soon develop similar solutions. When the AI tool he wanted still did not appear over time, he began developing OpenClaw himself.

“AI models are gaining more problem-solving abilities,” he said. “In the past, programming was needed, but now AI finds solutions on its own,” he explained. He also stressed that moving away from existing development methods and coding with AI takes time, but ultimately delivers better results.

Steinberger compared learning AI development to playing the guitar and advised: “You can’t be good from the start. It takes time.” He added: “AI development should be approached like play.” He said creative exploration will become even more important in the AI era, and added that people seeking to solve problems can create greater value together with AI.
