Frontier Airlines will introduce SpaceX Starlink-based inflight Wi-Fi in early 2027. CNBC reported on July 14 that five low-cost carriers - including Frontier Airlines, Volaris, Wizz, JetSmart and Cebu Pacific - will launch Starlink inflight internet service from early next year.

Frontier Airlines said it plans to put its first Airbus aircraft equipped with Starlink internet into service in early 2027. The five airlines operate more than 1,000 aircraft.

Frontier Airlines has been among the slower U.S. carriers to introduce inflight Wi-Fi. Former Chief Executive Barry Biffle previously said the airline was cautious because the equipment could add weight to aircraft.

Frontier Airlines discussed introducing its first inflight Wi-Fi service with Starlink in 2022. It has not yet disclosed whether passengers will be able to use the service for free.

Major airlines that have contracted with Starlink are providing free Wi-Fi to loyalty programme members. Starlink has signed contracts with more than 40 airlines worldwide, including United Airlines and American Airlines.

All five airlines participating in the deal have private equity firm Indigo Partners as an investor. Indigo Partners is led by airline industry investor Bill Franke.

Low-cost carriers are also facing pressure to adjust their strategies. As major airlines continue to increase revenue from forward cabins, the traditional low-cost model built on minimising seats and amenities is being challenged. Frontier Airlines plans to introduce first-class seats next year in response.
