Naver Connect Foundation said on Monday it signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Institute of Special Education to develop artificial intelligence (AI) education content for special education.

The agreement aims to introduce tailored content for special education settings based on the foundation's AI and digital education capabilities, and to support students with disabilities so they can learn future technologies systematically.

The two organisations plan to develop AI- and digital-based teaching and learning materials for special education and distribute them to schools. They also plan to provide customised AI education content for special education platforms and build a sustainable cooperation system to gradually improve access to technology and related education for students with disabilities.

Naver Connect Foundation has continued projects aimed at narrowing the digital divide to support groups underserved in education. In 2024, it carried out "barrier-free" AI education for students in integrated classes, in which students with disabilities and students without disabilities learned AI ethics together. From August, it plans to run a support programme for current and prospective teachers to expand the use of AI in special education settings.

Kim Sun-mi (김선미), head of the National Institute of Special Education, said the agreement would be an important opportunity to connect strong private-sector content with the special education support system. She said the institute would continue to work actively to strengthen the digital capabilities of students with disabilities.

Gong Gi-jung (공기중), chair of Naver Connect Foundation, stressed that the foundation works with various partners so that both students with disabilities and those without disabilities can easily experience and grow with new technologies. He said it would support tailored AI education in special education settings in step with the growing importance of AI education.
