[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] Global bicycle brand Trek has launched the Borego+, a fat-tire electric bicycle equipped with a throttle, as it moves to target the North American e-bike market. The move expands its lineup into the fast-growing fat-tire e-bike market, departing from its strategy focused on premium bicycles and mid-drive e-bikes.
On July 9 local time, EV outlet Electrek reported that Trek unveiled the Class 2 e-bike Borego+, which supports both pedal assist and a thumb throttle. In some regions, it will also sell the Class 3 Borego+ S model with a higher top speed.
The Borego+ has an assisted top speed of 20 miles per hour, or about 32 km per hour. The Borego+ S supports up to 28 miles per hour, or about 45 km per hour. The Class 3 model is not sold in California due to related regulations.
The new model is significant as a change in Trek's product strategy. Trek has targeted the market around high-performance mid-drive e-bikes, but this time it has entered in earnest the throttle-based fat-tire e-bike market led by direct-to-consumer brands.
The powertrain uses a 750W rear hub motor with maximum torque of 90 Nm. The removable battery has a capacity of 720 Wh and enables up to 60 miles, or about 97 km, on a single charge. The battery is designed as a top-mounted removable structure with a locking function, allowing charging both when it is attached to the bike and when it is removed.
Its configuration also stands out for considering both off-road and everyday riding. It is fitted with 4-inch-wide fat tires to increase traction on loose surfaces such as sand or dirt roads, and includes puncture protection. It also adopts an 80 mm suspension fork and an upright riding position to improve comfort on unpaved roads as well as in city riding.
It also 강화했습니다. The maximum payload is 440 pounds, or about 200 kg, and it includes as standard a heavy-duty MIK-compatible rear rack, accessory mounting points, fenders, a skid plate, a brake light and turn signals. The configuration is aimed at a wide range of uses from commuting to shopping and leisure activities.
Software features are also provided. Linked with Trek's Central app, it supports a digital lock, battery status alerts, customized riding mode settings and checking estimated range. It is described as strengthening usability and management functions beyond simple hardware competition.
Sales will be conducted through Trek's official dealers and its own online mall. The price is set at $2,499. Trek's strategy is to add products in a relatively reasonable price range while actively targeting consumers who value brand trust and a nationwide service network.
The industry views the Borego+ launch as a shift in Trek's market strategy rather than a simple addition of a new product. As the North American fat-tire e-bike market grows rapidly, the entry of a major global bicycle brand into full-scale competition is expected to further broaden consumer choices.
