Samsung Display will supply two types of OLED panels for Genesis' full-size electric SUV GV90. Samsung Display will supply 24.6-inch and 13.2-inch OLEDs for the GV90 and began shipments this month, it said on Aug. 26.

A variable cinematic display with a 24.6-inch OLED is positioned in the center of the vehicle. While driving, it shows driving information and navigation on a 23.6-inch screen. When parked, pressing an expansion button raises the display by 90 mm and widens the screen by about 1.7 times.

Compared with LCDs that require backlighting, OLEDs are about 30 percent thinner and weigh about 70 percent as much. They are installed to suit a pop-up display whose screen moves up and down. The company explained this is because it is advantageous for designing the driving structure and increasing design flexibility in the limited space inside a vehicle.

The cinematic display has a 24:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 3,840 by 1,440. It meets 100 percent of DCI-P3, a color gamut standard used in the digital film industry. It uses a tandem structure that stacks two organic light-emitting layers to secure brightness and lifespan.

A 13.2-inch OLED with a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 is applied to the back of the front-seat headrests. Rear-seat passengers can watch content or use it for video conferencing with the same color reproduction as the central display.

Joo-hyung Lee (이주형), head of Samsung Display's small and medium-sized display business unit and a vice president, said Samsung OLED applied to the GV90 was a symbolic case of premium displays and luxury mobility coming together to deliver a new experience. He said the two companies would continue to create new value in luxury mobility based on their respective strengths.
