Cursor is developing a general-purpose AI agent to compete with Anthropic's Claude Cowork. The Information reported on Wednesday, citing 2 people familiar with the matter, calling it a move to diversify beyond coding tools.

According to the report, Cursor began developing the new AI agent in April as it leased computing capacity from SpaceX's AI division, SpaceXAI.

The AI agent, internally called Sand, is Cursor's first product aimed at general users rather than developers. It can act as a personalized assistant that handles non-engineering tasks such as replying to emails and texts and organizing spreadsheets.

It is unclear whether Sand will be released. Cursor typically rolls out new products to employees first and then decides whether to launch them. The Information said the roadmap could change as a merger between SpaceXAI and Cursor is under way.

If Sand is launched, competition in the AI workplace assistant market is expected to intensify. OpenAI also announced an agent called ChatGPT Work on Wednesday that can automate presentations and conduct research.
