[Digital Today reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] OpenAI on July 9 (local time) officially launched GPT-5.6.
OpenAI released GPT-5.6 in three versions: Sol, Luna and Terra. Sol is the top-performance version, while Luna is focused on speed. Terra is suited to everyday work.
Sol also supports an ultra mode that puts more computing resources into tasks and can delegate tasks to multiple sub-models.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (샘 알트먼) told CNBC that Sol is 54 percent more token-efficient than Anthropic's latest model in agent coding tasks. He said, "Every company now thinks about spending and the value it gets from AI."
OpenAI also launched a GPT-5.6-based agent called ChatGPT Work that can collect context across connected apps and files and create work materials such as documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
ChatGPT Work works on the web, smartphones and computers, and was first released to all users on Mac and Windows apps. A web version will be released later.
Axios reported that GPT-5.6 is receiving good reviews among users who have tested it. Some see Anthropic's Fable as better in terms of raw intelligence, but Axios said GPT-5.6 is seen as a more reliable model for everyday tasks.
Pietro Schirano (피에트로 스키라노), CEO of MagicPathAI, wrote on X (Twitter), "I have tested it for months, and without exaggeration it is the best model I have used. It is fast, smart and genuinely creative." Theo Brown (테오 브라운), CEO of T3Chat, said, "GPT-5.6-Sol is world-class in computer use."
Investor Matt Shumer (맷 슈머) wrote on X, "It is an amazing model, but Fable was better at almost every task I tested." Dan Shipper (댄 십퍼), CEO of Every, compared GPT-5 to a Porsche and likened Fable to a "warp drive," saying, "If you need to cross a galaxy, use Fable, and if you need the best tool for getting around the neighborhood, use 5.6."
