KT said on Wednesday its university IT supporters group, the fourth cohort of KIT, carried out its first AI education and mentoring volunteer programme this year at Daecheong Middle and High School on Daecheongdo in Ongjin county, Incheon.

The fourth cohort consists of 24 newly selected university students, mainly science and engineering majors. They completed about two months of preparatory training and, through coaching from experts and KT employees, prepared an AI education programme.

The programme was designed to give island-area youths, who have relatively low access to digital education, opportunities to learn AI and to help narrow the digital divide. At Daecheong Middle and High School, the first site for the cohort, activities included AI ethics education, hands-on experience with generative AI and participatory sessions such as board games and discussions.

KIT members held group mentoring geared to students’ level as older university peers, sharing and advising on grade-specific concerns about careers and studies. On July 10, the group will continue the programme for all students at Baengnyeong Middle and High School, and in the second half will expand its activities to middle schools in the Busan area.

KT has carried out social contribution activities to help narrow the digital divide, starting in 2007 with the country’s first IT-sharing initiative, IT Supporters. Since 2024, it has newly selected KIT members and has continued AI education and mentoring for middle school students in island and mountainous regions.

Jung-woo Lee (이정우), an executive director in charge of KT’s ESG promotion, said, "As KT aims to be an AX platform company, it will continue to expand AI education so that students nationwide can understand and use AI safely and healthily."
