Makinarocks said on Monday it will cooperate with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of efforts to expand its defence AI business.

Makinarocks will move to develop AI technology tailored to defence environments by using AWS cloud infrastructure and security technology. It will train and run inference for large-scale AI models on AWS cloud computing infrastructure. It also plans to design high-availability, low-latency architecture suited to operational environments that require stable and fast responses. The company aims to meet security and regulatory standards for South Korea's defence and defence industry projects by adhering to AWS security best practices.

Makinarocks will retain its role as the developer and holder of defence data and core algorithms throughout the process. AWS will be responsible for cloud infrastructure security, while Makinarocks will be responsible for the security of defence data and applications operated on top of it, the company said, stressing that the structure implements the security framework required for domestic defence and defence industry projects.

Makinarocks plans to further develop its core AI operations platform, Runway, into a form optimised for defence environments, based on AI operations experience accumulated in mission-critical industrial settings.

Jeong-won Yoon (윤정원), head of the public sector at AWS Korea, said, "To introduce AI in mission-critical areas including defence, the highest level of security and stability is required along with high accuracy." Yoon said, "AWS will cooperate with Makinarocks based on proven cloud infrastructure and security capabilities, and we hope this will lay the foundation to safely develop and operate trustworthy AI in the defence sector."

Seong-ho Yoon (윤성호), CEO of Makinarocks, said, "This cooperation with AWS will be an important milestone for Runway, Makinarocks' core product, to be reborn as a defence AI operating system (AI OS)." Yoon said, "By combining AWS' global defence cloud experience and infrastructure, we will elevate defence AI tailored to the Republic of Korea to the world's highest level."
