[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Tesla’s 2026 Model Y is sold in two versions, base and premium, with differences in price, battery capacity, charging performance and interior specifications. The base version focuses on price competitiveness, while the premium version targets longer range and higher-end features.
On July 5 (local time), electric vehicle outlet CleanTechnica reported the 2026 Model Y base version is priced at $39,990. With a $3,300 down payment, it can be purchased at $529 per month on a 72-month, zero-interest plan, or $575 per month with no down payment. The premium model costs $45,990. Under the same down payment condition, a 72-month plan at 0.99 percent interest works out to about $631 per month.
The biggest difference is the battery and charging performance. The base version has a 60 kWh battery for 321 miles of range on the EPA standard, with a maximum charging speed of 150 kW. The premium version has a 75 kWh battery for 357 miles of EPA range, and its maximum charging speed rises to 250 kW.
Interior and exterior equipment also differs. The base version has a fabric headliner, synthetic-fiber seats and a 7-speaker audio system. The premium version offers front and rear light bars, a glass roof, front ambient lighting, ventilated vegan leather seats, acoustic glass, a 13-speaker and two-subwoofer audio system, and a rear-seat display.
Both models can add dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) for an additional $2,000. The rear-wheel-drive base version takes 5.4 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill, while the dual-motor base version takes 4.6 seconds. A towing hitch costs $1,000 if installed at the factory, or $1,300 if installed after delivery.
Common features include a large power liftgate, expanded rear-seat space and the latest Hardware 4-based camera system. A front bumper camera is also applied, allowing Tesla’s latest driver-assistance software, FSD V14, to run.
FSD V14 is automatically billed at $99 per month after 30 days from vehicle purchase. Premium Connectivity also switches to paid service after 30 days and costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. It includes satellite maps, real-time traffic visualisation, Netflix, YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music, web browsing, remote live camera viewing and limited access to Tesla’s AI app Grok. Grok allows only 7 to 10 questions every few hours, and unlimited use requires a separate subscription.
The assessment of FSD V14 was relatively strong. The outlet said FSD V14 could drive to a destination in most driving situations without using the brake, accelerator or steering wheel. It also mentioned cases in which the system slowed or stopped after recognising pedestrians or wild animals.
It also has limitations. When a bicycle rack was mounted on the towing hitch, FSD operated, but the vehicle often refused to reverse because it recognised the rack as a rear obstacle.
Ultimately, choosing the 2026 Model Y narrows to whether to prioritise price or opt for longer range, faster charging and higher-end interior equipment. If AWD, a towing hitch, an FSD subscription and Premium Connectivity costs are included, the actual purchase cost is expected to vary widely depending on options.
