[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] Fujifilm has unveiled 2 new products to mark the 40th anniversary of the launch of its disposable film camera, QuickSnap. It is expanding its film camera lineup by adding a black-and-white-only model and an active model with enhanced waterproofing.
According to IT media outlet Engadget on Tuesday (local time), Fujifilm plans to launch the QuickSnap Black & White and the QuickSnap Active this autumn.
The new products target consumers who want film’s distinctive feel and an analogue shooting experience even as smartphone cameras have become central to photography. Fujifilm said, "Even in an era when the smartphone in your pocket has become the best camera, demand for analogue shooting still exists," and explained that the disposable film camera market is steadily holding up.
The most eye-catching product is the QuickSnap Black & White, dedicated to black-and-white shooting. It uses ISO400 black-and-white negative film and can take up to 27 shots at a time. It does not support waterproofing, but it includes a built-in flash for shooting in dark environments. The flash’s effective range is about 3 metres.
Fujifilm explained it kept the point-and-shoot experience intact, allowing users to take photos by simply pressing the shutter without any separate complex settings. It targets users who want film’s distinctive black-and-white feel, whether for travel or everyday records.
The QuickSnap Active, unveiled alongside it, focuses on outdoor activities and water play. As a successor product that replaces the existing waterproof QuickSnap, it comes with protective housing and a wrist strap as standard. It uses ISO800 colour negative film and can also take 27 shots. It does not include a built-in flash, but supports waterproofing to a depth of about 10.7 metres (35 feet), allowing use at pools, beaches and in water sports environments.
Fujifilm explained that both products keep the easy-to-use approach while segmenting the lineup so consumers can choose based on shooting purpose. The black-and-white model targets consumers who want film’s distinctive classic results, while the active model focuses on boosting usefulness for travel and leisure activities. A key feature is that it broadened consumer choices based on shooting environment and film characteristics rather than adding a large number of functions.
Prices were also disclosed. The QuickSnap Black & White is set to sell for $22.9 (about 35,600 won), and the QuickSnap Active for $24.75 (about 38,500 won). Both products are set to launch this autumn.
Fujifilm emphasised again the analogue feel and simple shooting experience of the QuickSnap brand that has continued for 40 years through the new products.
The industry is watching whether the expanded lineup will lead to a strategy targeting the retro-sentiment market, as there remains a steady consumer base that wants film’s distinctive colour tones and shooting experience even as smartphone cameras have replaced most everyday shooting.
