SpaceX has shown investors a prototype AI device similar in form to a smartphone, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Tuesday.

SpaceX is believed to have unveiled the device to investors and other stakeholders ahead of a listing.

The device is still at an early stage, so its design could change. Responding to the WSJ report, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk (일론 머스크) denied it as “completely fake news.”

The prototype shown by SpaceX was described as thinner and sleeker than an iPhone, sitting somewhere between a small touchscreen smartphone and the Rabbit R1.

The SpaceX prototype is expected to be based on an in-house operating system and integrate xAI technology that SpaceX acquired earlier this year. It appears to be aiming for a new type of device that is not dependent on other companies’ platforms and puts AI forward as the default interface.

TechCrunch noted that, as seen in the cases of Humane and Rabbit, launching an AI device and securing consumer demand are separate issues.

TechCrunch said it remains unclear whether SpaceX will actually mass-produce and sell the device. SpaceX has signaled its intent to expand its wireless business with Starlink Mobile and has been mentioned as a rival to Verizon and AT&T. One analyst also offered a view that T-Mobile or AT&T could be seen as an acquisition target.

OpenAI is also preparing a separate AI device. OpenAI is developing the AI device with Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer.
