[DigitalToday reporter Yoonseo Lee] Google’s research tool NotebookLM has added a feature that creates a 60-second vertical artificial intelligence (AI) summary video based on uploaded materials.

On June 30 (local time), IT outlet The Verge reported that the feature will be rolled out in phases first to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers.

The newly launched feature expands NotebookLM’s existing research-assistance functions into short-form video. Users can upload documents and materials and, instead of stopping at text or audio summaries, quickly scan key points in a short video.

Google introduced the feature as providing a “TikTok-style AI video.” The generated video is a 60-second vertical format and is made based on source materials uploaded by the user to the app. It is focused on compressing a specific topic into a short amount of time.

How it works is relatively simple. After opening NotebookLM on the web or in the app, users select the desired notebook and choose “Video” under Studio on the right side of the screen. They then select “Shorts,” choose or directly enter a topic for NotebookLM to cover, and press the “Generate” button.

A sample video released by Google covered Australia’s failed emu war case. The video was produced by composing emus with paper-cutting-style AI images and adding narration. It is short, but it delivers source-based explanation together with visual elements.

With this addition, NotebookLM’s content creation options have widened. NotebookLM has already offered features that create AI podcasts, cinematic videos and visual explanatory materials. By adding the Shorts option, it strengthened a structure that reworks the same research materials into multiple formats.

Support is limited, however. It is currently available only in English, and support for free users will be added later.

As a result, for the time being the feature is expected to be tested mainly by paid subscribers and English users. NotebookLM is expanding its scope beyond a simple note-organising tool, broadening functions toward converting uploaded materials into multiple formats that include audio and video.
