[DigitalToday reporter Yoonseo Lee] Anthropic has launched a desktop app called Claude Science tailored to scientific research work.
An IT outlet, 9to5Mac, reported on June 30 (local time) that the app is offered separately from the existing Claude app for Mac. It is being distributed first in beta on macOS and Linux.
Claude Science is a research-focused product distinct from the general Claude app. The existing Claude app for Mac includes the AI model Claude, Claude Cowork and coding features. Anthropic added a separate app to target demand for scientific analysis. It split the product lineup to directly target users focused on research purposes.
Anthropic presented analysis execution, database search and research workflow tracking as the core functions of Claude Science. The company said, "Claude Science runs analyses directly, searches databases, and tracks every step from data organization to publication." It also stressed that it is designed to let researchers spend more time on actual scientific research than on repetitive organizing work.
Eligible plans are limited. Claude Science can be used on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free users are not included, and initial users are expected to be centered on individual paying users and organizational customers.
The rollout scope also stands out. The beta supports macOS and Linux first, and it did not mention whether Windows 11 will be supported. As it handles research workflows in a desktop environment, Anthropic appears to be focusing on broadening the usage environment by offering features as a separate app.
Anthropic is also providing separate detailed documentation related to Claude Science and has published download paths. The product introduction focused on continuity in the research process rather than simply listing functions. A key feature is that it foregrounded a message of connecting steps from data organization and analysis to search and publication.
This launch is being read as an extension of a move to break Claude out of a single general-purpose AI tool into purpose-specific desktop apps. Since Anthropic added a separate product alongside the existing Claude app for Mac, a point to watch is whether it will broaden its app lineup beyond research into other specialized work areas.
