LG Energy Solution is raising the recycling rate of an essential solution used in making battery cathode materials to 97 percent and expanding it to global sites. LG Energy Solution said on Tuesday it published the “LG Energy Solution ESG Report 2025,” which includes the plan.
The report includes key achievements such as expanding new recycling technology for NMP (N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone) solvent, appointing an outside director as board chair for the first time and establishing ESG disclosure rules. NMP is a solution used to help materials adhere in the cathode manufacturing process. The company applied new technology developed and verified at its Nanjing unit in China to lift the recycling rate from about 80 percent to 97 percent. It is rolling out the technology starting with the Nanjing plant to the Ochang Energy Plant in South Korea and its plant in Poland.
In governance, it appointed outside director Park Jin-kyu (박진규) as board chair for the first time. Of the 7 directors, 4 are outside directors, including Park, Yeo Mi-sook (여미숙), Han Seung-soo (한승수) and Lee Myung-kyu (이명규), forming a majority. Ahead of the 2028 implementation of the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Korea Sustainability Standards Board (KSSB), it also newly established the “ESG Information Management and Disclosure Rules” and overhauled its disclosure governance.
It also strengthened its compliance system. The company said it revamped the contractor management process at global construction sites, including overseas joint ventures, and launched an always-on response system to check workforce and compliance risks in real time.
In the foreword, CEO Kim Dong-myung (김동명) said, “LG Energy Solution has made history in the battery industry over the past 30 years through challenges and persistence.” He said, “As battery applications expand beyond electric vehicles to various industries such as energy, robots and aviation, we will strengthen business competitiveness and sustainability based on ESG.”
