An inter-agency consultative body has officially launched to respond to AI-enabled crimes such as deepfake sexual exploitation, false or unfair AI advertising and AI financial fraud.
The Korea Communications Commission said it held a kickoff meeting for the "Inter-Agency Consultative Body for Responding to Artificial Intelligence (AI) Crime" on June 26. It said participants discussed a "Comprehensive Response Plan to Eradicate AI Crime" and measures to build an "Integrated AI Crime Response System".
The body includes 10 agencies: the Korea Communications Commission, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Financial Services Commission, the Fair Trade Commission, the Personal Information Protection Commission, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the National Police Agency.
It was launched on the assessment that joint responses among relevant ministries are needed because AI-enabled crimes such as deepfake sexual exploitation, false or unfair AI advertising and AI financial fraud span multiple areas including online platforms, finance, telecommunications, personal information, investigations and international cooperation.
The comprehensive response plan discussed on the day covers the full response process, including prevention, detection and blocking, investigation and enforcement, victim recovery and prevention of recurrence. It focuses on linking the expertise and policy tools of relevant ministries.
The relevant ministries also agreed on operating a permanent integrated response system to quickly share AI crime information and jointly analyse and respond to related signs.
Kominsoo Ko (고민수), a standing commissioner at the Korea Communications Commission, said, "Because crimes that abuse AI technology are difficult to address through the efforts of any single agency, we will work closely with relevant ministries to prevent harm to the public and build an environment where people can use AI with confidence."
The Korea Communications Commission plans to announce the comprehensive response plan to eradicate AI crime after holding consultations with the National AI Strategy Committee and others.
