OpenAI has readjusted how GPT-5.5 Instant responds in ChatGPT, the default model used most often.

According to the IT outlet NineToFiveMac on June 24, local time, the change applies first to paying users and will be reflected sequentially for free users starting a day later.

The update focuses on improving responses. OpenAI said, "The most-used model can better understand the intent behind questions and answer accordingly." It also said it was improved to handle complex constraints more reliably and to provide more useful and consistent shopping and local recommendations.

OpenAI also said the adjustment has made "conversations much more fun." It is seen as focusing not only on improving answer accuracy but also on making interactions with ChatGPT more natural.

GPT-5.5 Instant has already had its response tendencies changed once since it was first introduced on May 5. At the time, OpenAI said ChatGPT's default model provided higher intelligence while reducing unnecessary use of emojis.

A few weeks later, it also carried out an update to improve readability and the naturalness of everyday conversations, and to improve the speed and flow of answers for practical tasks.

At the time, OpenAI said the model was "easier to read, more natural in everyday conversation, answers at a more appropriate speed in tasks that provide practical help, and reduced responses that are overly long or have too many bullet points." This update is also interpreted as a continuation of that work, refining tone, response structure and situational appropriateness.

Users are expected to be able to feel changes in ChatGPT's response tone, recommendation methods and question interpretation over the next few days. Differences may appear especially in requests that present multiple conditions at once, or in questions where understanding context is important, such as shopping or searching for local information.

The rollout schedule also differs by user tier. OpenAI distributed the new GPT-5.5 Instant model first to paying users on the day, and plans to apply it to free users starting the next day.
