Genesis has confirmed plans to unveil its flagship electric sport utility vehicle, the GV90, on Sept. 9. It is the first time a specific unveiling date has been presented since last year's launch was delayed due to technical issues.

Electrek, an electric-vehicle outlet, reported on June 23 that the Genesis GV90 is being developed on track for a late-2026 launch, as initially expected.

The GV90 is the top-end electric SUV in the Genesis brand. Its launch timing was unclear after the production schedule was postponed last year due to what was described as "unresolved technical challenges", but Genesis has now made the Sept. 9 unveiling plan official. A Hyundai Motor Group official also told local media, "We are preparing the GV90 launch schedule with the goal of unveiling it on Sept. 9," adding, "However, the final schedule is being coordinated internally."

Launch preparations have entered the final stage. Hyundai is reported to have produced more than 250 mass-production GV90 vehicles at its Ulsan dedicated EV plant. The GV90 is also significant as the first model produced at the first dedicated EV plant Hyundai Motor Group has built in South Korea.

As the launch nears, GV90 test vehicles have been spotted in the United States, Europe and South Korea. At least 2 versions have been seen, including a standard model and a top-spec variant with coach doors. In particular, a test vehicle spotted in the United States was seen using a Tesla Supercharger, raising the possibility that North American models will come standard with an NACS charging port.

The interior is expected to largely carry over the design of the Neolun concept car unveiled last year. A large infotainment display, premium cashmere and leather materials, and 4 VIP captain's seats are cited as key specifications. Hyundai Motor Group's next-generation infotainment platform, Connect W, is also expected to be applied for the first time. The system is designed to support app installation and user-customised screen layouts like a smartphone.

Industry attention is also focused on whether a next-generation EV platform will be used. The GV90 is highly likely to be the first model to adopt Hyundai Motor Group's next-generation EV platform, eM, which is under development. The eM platform is regarded as a next-generation architecture that will replace the current E-GMP. Hyundai has previously said vehicles based on eM could provide driving range improved by up to 50 percent compared with the existing E-GMP platform.

The vehicle is expected to be fitted with a high-capacity battery pack exceeding 100 kWh. The industry expects a driving range of at least 300 miles, or about 480 km, on a single charge. Pricing has not been disclosed, but the top coach-door model is being discussed as starting above 200 million won, with the standard model possibly starting around 100 million won. In the United States, it is expected to be sold as a 2027 model-year vehicle with a starting price of about $100,000.

In this context, the GV90 is expected to serve as the top model in Genesis' electrification strategy. With the launch schedule confirmed, the production specifications, whether the new platform is applied, adoption of the North American charging standard, and the final price are emerging as key points to watch.
