LG Display OLED has become the first in the world to receive third-party certification that it reproduces 100 percent accurately the colors and brightness intended by original content creators. LG Display said on Sunday it obtained Intertek's "Perfect Color/Brightness Accuracy up to 500lux" certification for all of its large OLED panels for monitors and TVs.

The certification quantitatively verifies how accurately a display renders the colors and brightness intended by content creators under typical viewing conditions. In the past, simple specifications such as color gamut or peak luminance were presented as picture-quality standards, but that approach had limits in objectively measuring real-world image quality. Intertek applied various test patterns to OLED and LCD products and quantified changes in color and brightness at specific locations on the screen.

The measurements showed LG Display's OLED panels recorded 100 percent color accuracy, 100 percent brightness accuracy and were free of color crosstalk, meaning no interference from surrounding colors. LCD products measured in the same way fell short of 100 percent in color and brightness accuracy. In particular, some premium LCD TVs that use RGB LED backlights showed color crosstalk, in which the color of objects is distorted depending on the color of the video background.

The difference stems from structural differences in how the displays emit light. LCDs, which control a backlight by zones, have a structural limitation in which light leaks into adjacent zones. OLEDs, by contrast, operate with pixel-dimming technology in which millions of pixels emit light independently, blocking light bleed and color interference at the source.

Hyunwoo Lee (이현우), head of LG Display's large-display business unit, said the certification objectively proved that OLED perfectly and accurately implements the picture-quality values consumers need, "color and brightness", as intended by content creators. He said the company would communicate more clearly to global customers the value of premium picture quality that only OLED can deliver and continue strengthening its market leadership.
