KB Financial Group is spotlighting the sinking of the Ukishima Maru that occurred shortly after Korea's liberation. It aims to inform the public about unresolved issues, including establishing the truth and repatriating remains, and to broaden social interest even though more than 80 years have passed since the incident.

KB Financial said on June 16 it released a video titled "Ukishima Maru, a story we will remember" about the sinking.

The Ukishima Maru incident refers to the sinking of the Ukishima Maru, a repatriation vessel carrying forcibly mobilised Korean conscript labourers, in waters near Maizuru in Japan's Kyoto Prefecture shortly after liberation in August 1945. Many victims never returned home, and issues such as establishing the truth and repatriating remains still remain.

The video was co-planned with Seo Kyung-duk (서경덕), a professor at Sungshin Women's University known as a "Korea promoter," and actor Ryu Seung-ryong (류승룡) participated in the narration.

KB Financial plans to visit the Maizuru area in Kyoto Prefecture with Seo in July to cover the accident waters, local memorial facilities and a temple where remains are kept. It also plans to produce and distribute follow-up video content, Korean and Japanese-language guides, and a digital guidebook.

A KB Financial official said, "It was produced so that we can remember together with the public the unfinished history that continues even now, more than 80 years after liberation." The official added, "We ask for your strong interest in a documentary on the ground in Japan and various offline campaigns as well."
