Sh Suhyup Bank will introduce an AI-based system to determine whether copies of identification cards are authentic at all of its branches. The move aims to strengthen identity verification procedures at in-person counters in response to increasingly sophisticated ID forgery and alteration crimes.

Sh Suhyup Bank said on Tuesday it has introduced the banking sector's first AI-based in-person system for verifying copies of identification cards and will operate it at all branches from that day.

The ID authenticity verification system uses patent-based image preprocessing technology and an AI model. It determines whether an ID has been forged or altered by comprehensively analysing unique ID characteristics and noise patterns, lighting conditions and shooting angles.

Suhyup Bank also expects the system, applied simultaneously across all branches, to help prevent financial crimes using forged identification cards.

Chief Executive Shin Hak-gi (신학기) said it would be a strong line of defence against increasingly sophisticated forgery crimes. He added the bank will continue to protect customers' assets and personal information through thorough security innovation.
