Microsoft is considering restructuring options for its Xbox games business, including a spinoff, conversion into a wholly owned subsidiary and the creation of a joint venture, The Information reported on June 12 local time.

Microsoft is also weighing a plan to reorganise Xbox as a wholly owned subsidiary, like LinkedIn or GitHub, the report said.

Such a structure could make a future sale easier. The Information said there would be no immediate restructuring and that all options were at the review stage.

Xbox has recently been struggling at Microsoft. It has bet on subscription services and cloud gaming, but that has not offset falling console sales and a lack of blockbuster titles.

Asha Sharma (아샤 샤르마), who took over as CEO of the Xbox division in February, plans to increase investment in developing new titles for major franchises such as Halo, Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. Satya Nadella (사티아 나델라), Microsoft CEO, and Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood (에이미 후드) approved a plan to expand the game development budget to its highest level in the new fiscal year starting in July. The final budget has not yet been set.

Bloomberg earlier reported that Microsoft plans to carry out its first restructuring since Sharma took the role, including large-scale layoffs and cuts to the marketing budget next month.
