OpenAI will acquire startup Ona to strengthen its AI coding tool Codex.
CNBC reported on Wednesday that Ona provides a preconfigured secure cloud environment that allows AI agents to access tools, systems and work context.
OpenAI expects Codex will be able to perform longer-running tasks using Ona’s technology. It also plans to support more organisations in deploying agents that handle tasks on users’ behalf in real operating environments.
The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
OpenAI has led the spread of AI since launching ChatGPT in 2022. In recent months, it has been increasing investment in Codex as software developers make greater use of AI agents. Rival Anthropic has also grown rapidly over the past year on the popularity of its coding tool Claude Code.
Codex weekly active users increased to more than 5 million from 3 million in April. Anthropic is not disclosing the number of Claude Code users.
